Imagine input:

100,000 customers

Mule Batch takes those records and manages their processing in blocks/queues rather than treating them as one giant normal flow payload.

Conceptually:

Batch Job

Load records

Customer 1

Customer 100,000

Batch Step
   ↓

   ↓

On Complete

The current docs describe Batch Job as splitting source data into records and using persistent queues for reliability.
