7.1A war of unprecedented scale
The Confederacy sought only to defend its independence; the Union had to conquer a vast territory to restore itself. The North held major advantages in population, industry, railroads, and naval power, while the South counted on defensive fighting, cotton diplomacy, and superior early leadership.
The war ground on for four years and cost roughly 750,000 lives. Battles such as Antietam and Gettysburg (1863) killed thousands in a day. Industrial-scale warfare—rifled muskets, railroads, ironclads, and total mobilization—made this a grimly modern conflict. What many expected to be a short war became a prolonged struggle that reshaped both the nation and the meaning of the Union cause.
